THE PROJECT
ART Lab is the first phase of a redevelopment of the Tache Hall Residence into the new Music, Art and Theatre Complex. ART Lab houses the drawing and painting studios, classrooms, lecture theatre, print-making, and art gallery that cannot be contained within the dormitory-style layout of the residence building. Overhead skywalks plug the 2nd and 3rd floors of ART Lab into Tache Hall. The circuit is completed by underground linkage to the University’s pedestrian tunnel network.
JURY COMMENTS
The entry to the ART Lab, punctuated by V shaped columns, is engaging. The studio spaces are flooded with light and face the core of the campus. The dynamic 4-storey open staircase serves as the meeting space for the school. The contemporary building plays masterfully against the early 20th century residence that it embraces.
