THE PROJECT
Winnipeg’s abundant prairie sky is the inspiration behind this project. The terminal building provides travelers with visual access to the jets readying for take-off and the extended horizon beyond. The departure hall ceiling is evocative of flowing prairie grasses blown by the wind. The airside lounge has a gently curving ceiling that rises in heroically cantilevered soffits evocative of wings and jet flight. Travelers arriving in Winnipeg are welcomed in an iconic Hall characterized by a colourful canopy of circular skylights and dynamic light that ultimately provide an exciting new front door to our City.
JURY COMMENTS
Airports are challenging for the architect because of the narrow scope for design creativity. The large glass walls in the terminal building invite both the light and the landscape into its spaces. The building is gently poised and restrained. The interior spaces benefit from the undulating wood ceiling that is punctuated with skylights. The Winnipeg Richardson International Airport takes advantage of its opportunities well.
